Do we have vines in Ljubljana too?
Slovenia as the wine-growing country has excellent wines from three wine regions, Podravje, Posavje and Primorska, which are appreciated both at home and abroad. But the vine also grows in Ljubljana. Firtly, the Grajska žametovka, sunbathing and and thriving near Ljubljana castle, and secondly, Trstenjakova trta, which grows on Trubarjeva ulica 3, in the center of the bustling city life.
Grajska žametovka can not only boasts with an elite location of the castle, but also with the most famous predecessor, Stara trta, which grows on Lent for more than 400 years and is considered the oldest still bearing fruit in the world. Its descendant, Grajska žametovka was planted in 1990 in Ljubljana on behalf of the friendship between the cities of Maribor and Ljubljana.
Žametovka is the noblest Slovenian vine sort and the natural conditions in Slovenia fully comply with it. Grajska žametovka grows well too and shows that the location of Ljubljana castle is also advantageous to wine growing. Its keepers of the vine are Ljubljana Festival, which is also the manager of Ljubljana castle, and vinski konvent Sv. Urbana. Grajska žametovka is also under the watchful eye of professionals from National Institute of Chemistry Slovenia. The amount of wine produced per year ranges for three to five liters of wine. The bottle of Grajska žametovka, vintage 2001, was given as a present to Queen Elizabeth II during his visit in Slovenia.
The other urban vine, the Trstenjakova vine, is not troubles by urban life either. It is climbing the walls of the oldest slovenian foundation, Ustanova dr. Antona Trstenjaka. The vine was a few years ago donated to the city by the academician himself. It is taken care on behalf of Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana by mr. Mojmir Wondra, who is a member of the Head of the Department of Viticulture and Enology and a member of the Association of Slovenian Ljubljana table called Združenje slovenskega reda vitezov vina.
Yes, Ljubljana has its vines, on which it can be proud of. In addition, it is noted as place of vines and wine. This valuable international title was awarded to the city because of Zagreb's oldest international wine competition in the world, active scientific institutions and commercial wine tradition. We strive to promote and maintain this tradition.
